To all of those awesome fans out there who desire to volunteer. My name is Kathleen (Kat) and from my experience volunteering for any charity organization is just this natural high.
On Labor Day of last year (2009) I volunteered to work at the KCAL 9 News station for the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon in Los Angeles, California. During my 7 hr shift I answered phones and wrote down the pledges when people who have generous hearts called in to donate to the cause. From my experience the people who called in to pledge were just so wonderful that it made me feel like I was on some natural high being involved with something bigger than myself. The other volunteers were terrific, some of whom had been working on these telethons for many years. These children and young adults who have Muscular Dystrophy illnesses very much need our love and support. I was very happy to volunteer and I am hoping to be able to do it later this year. Every little bit helps.
Another big charity event I worked on was the "House that General Hospital Fans Built" with the Habitat for Humanity. Three of my friends won one of the auctions to work on the "GH Build" and I got to go with them. On a cold and rainy Dec. 12 morning, 2 friends and I went up to Hollywood, California where we helped build the 2nd story of a house for a terrific lady named Betty and her sons, 3 of whom have Aspergers. The 3 of us and a few other people worked with Kirsten Storms (Maxie Jones on "GH"), and met some others in the cast, such as Brandon Barash, Bradford Anderson, Julie Marie Berman and Leslie Charlson, etc. I'd never driven big 16" nails into thick pieces of ply wood before, so this was new and I had a blast. While working along side Kirsten, 78 other enthusiastic fans, and other cast members I felt that I was really making a difference in the lives of at least one family. Betty and her family would have this brand new home by Christmas. To me this was a terrific holiday present for them, and I hope to work on other events.
